The story of Longines started in 1866, Ernest Francillon, took over the management of the company on behalf his uncle. With people working at home, it mainly developed trade links to enable the company to sell its timepieces around the world, particularly in North America. Then after two years, the first Longines watches arrived, with the trademark the dials on its watches with a winged clepsydra and the word ”Longines”, Longines watches successfully prevent himself from the imitation. And a few years later, Longines was awarded for its precision and reliability at the Universal Exposition of Vienna.
In 1889, Longines provided five chronometers to the Italian explorer Luigi Amedeo, who did his best to reach the North Pole. In 1904, Longines furnished chronometers to a U.S. naval exploration of the North Polar Region. And in the next year of 1905, the first wristwatch of Longines was issued, and then in 1910s, its first wrist chronographs appeared in the sports market. Meanwhile, Longines produced military watches for World War, some of them, with pierced shrapnel covers,”demi-hunter” cased varieties, and others for being used at sea and in the air.
The year 1920 to 1930 became the golden years for Longines, with the remarkable growth of workers to 2.500, its production reached as high as 122.000 once a year. And it got the credit from many famous people as well, such as Admiral Richard E. Byrd. During this period, its most well-known wrist watches—the Weems and the Lindbergh models came out to the public. Longines was acquainted with the issues such as magnetism, moisture, low temperatures after having experienced the Artic cold temperatures, and they got so popular among pioneering avatios and the diver. And its movements are distinct and not interchangeable with one another. During 30s to 40s, a lot of unusual types of chronographs were produced, and many were manufacturer with Longines’ own movement. They were highly prized for their own separate niche in the collecting world.
